In 1985, following many years research into marine worms at the Dove Marine Laboratory of the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in England, Peter Cowin and Peter Olive established Seabait Ltd.

In the early years production was dedicated to supplying sea anglers with quality ragworms for use as fishing bait. In 1998 groundbreaking advances enabled Seabait to expand into producing specialised broodstock maturation diets for shrimp and fish.

The farm at Lynemouth in Northumberland uses heated cooling water from Alcan's power station, enabling the ragworm to grow throughout the year. In this way, millions of worms are produced every month from Seabait's high intensity production system.
